Promoting your business with Signage

By Steve Watson

If you are a proud business owner you need to show it with signage. Do people know that your business is located right there?

Or did you like most business owners just put up a ordinary hand painted sign to get your potential customers through the front door.

Well I can only imagine that you have no customers visiting your business.

What you should realize is that that signage above your business works all year round, 24 hours, 7 days a week. The sign actually works after you close your doors after hours.

With the latest computer technologies it is quite easy to design your own signage or get a graphic designer to design it at competitive prices.

Remember to keep it simple; do not clutter it with to much information as most people will be driving past and they only have part of a second to take in your information.

Use colors and shapes that will draw attention and make your signage stand out from the rest of the businesses all around you. Remember to check for spelling and grammar. Also insure that the signage fits with the image profile of your company.

A friend of mine once told me that one of his business friends had a scuba supplies shop and diving school in the middle of town. On a bright and sunny day he dressed up a mannequin in old type diving gear and promptly placed it on the buildings roof above his stores entrance.

This stood out like a sore thumb. Everybody talked about it and even a news station made a big deal about it. Soon after the story was aired the mannequin was stolen and the same news station covered the story again.

My friend estimated that this whole so called ordeal gave this shop owner approximately $25 000 worth of advertising for gratis. Now who would have thought that such a simple concept of dressing a dummy up would cause such a ruckus and be so lucrative?

So before doing your own, you should drive around for ideas. Look at what other business are doing, this is sure to spark your imagination. Remember not to copy. This is your business and pride.

Before I forget; check the town bylaws with regards to signage and their sizes and placements on buildings. Also remember when you have a lease that you also have to consider the buildings rules and regulations.

Remember to place your office hours on the front door or where ever it is in clear view of your customers, and make it readable and use fonts like verdana or arial.

Conclusion:

If you need and want customers through the front door then make sure your signage is up to it!

Great information, Steve.
I was a printer for 15 years and have some knowledge of type font, colors and readability. So many signs are so artistic, that they can't be read as you drive by.Poor advertisement.
Thanks for sharing.

Signage really gives a city flavour. In Western Europe laws tend to be strict and in the old cities there are barely any signs at all. Yet you go to Asia and are overwhelmed by a jungle of signs, all outcompeting each other everywhere you look. Guess where the economic growth is more dynamic.
