Inflatable Toys and Your Business

By Steve Watson

But I don’t sell toys I hear you say!

No we are not talking about selling toys; I am talking about using an inflatable blimp, a massive dinosaur, a large man blowing in the wind any thing so large that people have to take notice.

Yes these blowup figurines do not come cheap but you can hire them for your business during that week or day of your special marketing campaign. The cost is only a fraction from what you would pay when buying one.

You must realize that spending money on advertising and marketing can break your cash flow, but with this type of advertisement the cost is quite minimal.

You can use them for grand openings, marketing campaigns or even your business’s birthday. For you business to make it past the first year is an absolute astonishing accomplishment as up to 95% of all businesses don’t make it past there first year.

I have found that this type of attention drawer works quite well. Sometimes drawing crowds by the hundreds, especially when the figurine used is popular with children and women.

A few pointers when hiring a crowd pleaser: (Remember your business image)

o The blowup toy must be in good condition, no broken or torn pieces and things must fit together.

o The toy or figurine must be clean, no food or cold drink stains, paint marks or scuff marks.

o Be careful when hiring popular blowup toys, especially if your company name will be coupled to it.

A lot of other companies may have used them to build their brand name with that particular figurine and people may associate your company with theirs, giving you no interest from your would-be customers as the toy has been over used or a very bad reputation you and your business don’t deserve.

So how do you insure that the figurine or blowup toy is in good condition?

o Try and see the blown up version. Don’t hire if they are not prepared to blow it up for you, obviously they don’t value you as a customer.

o When seeing the blown up version insure that they give you the correct figurine that you chose. Most of the hiring companies have extra copies of the same figurines especially if they are very popular. You could end up with a worn, shabby looking version.

Local council regulations

o You have to do due diligence with regards to local council bylaws with regards to putting up such a large blowup toy.

o You may encroach on to a fire hydrant, or the walk space on the pavement or even be in the flight path of you local airfield when launching that blimp hundreds of feet into the air.

o Last warning! Make sure you’re allowed to have it on display, period!

So where do you find them?

o In the Yellow pages or local directories

o Sometimes you’ll see the toy having the hiring companies phone number on it

o And if you don’t see anything on it and you like it then just go into that business and ask them from whom they hired it

Conclusion:

Remember to have fun while using blowup toys to promote your business.

Intriguing. We don't have the inflatable-toys-rental business here in the Philippines yet. I smell a business opportunity. But say I purchase or fabricate, and subsequently rent out, a blow-up Mickey Mouse. Isn't this intellectual property? How do I know black helicopters from the Disney Corporation won't be swooping down and taking me away for a ride over the Pacific?

Thanks for the comment Nick. If you are using figurines from places like Disney you may need to contact them for licensing rights. I am not a laywer, so seek legal council to ensure you stay legal. You wouldn't want anybody stealing your ideas because they may be in some other part of the world.

Local and state signage laws can definately come into play here and should be checked out before you rent. Don't rely on the rental company for this information.
Also, make certain that the placement on the inflatable doesn't block the view of traffic into or out of your place of business.
Good intel.

Thank you for the warning Frederick. Always keep the law and rules on your side. Your there to do business, not start a fight you'll lose.
