Hybrids - gas savings
Part 1 - Technology - Hybrid Vehicles Part 1 of 4. First off: What is a hybrid car? Well, it’s a normal looking vehicle, with a not so normal drive train power plant; as a matter of fact the power plant consists of two motors – an electric motor and a gasoline powered motor. It also contains a special regenerating system to capture braking energy to store in the onboard battery. Why a hybrid you would ask? Why not a gas or electric powered car? Isn’t it more unreliable with this complex system? Won’t it break down more often? This is a difficult question and has not been answered as yet. You as the consumer will have to way up the pros and cons. Two motors are used in order to assist each other in the areas where they have weaknesses. For example, electric motors use little to no energy during idling and when turned off and use no gas during low speeds. Gas powered engines do better at high speeds and can deliver more power for a given motor weight. That means during rush hour stop and go driving, the electric motor works great and, as an added benefit, does not produce any exhaust fumes, thus reducing smog levels. At higher speeds – above 65 Km/h (40 mph) - the gas motor kicks in and gives that perky feeling so many car owners look for when driving on the highway. Another benefit of having the gas motor is it charges the batteries while it’s running. Many electric car owners have been stranded within an extension cord range of a power outlet. Hybrid owners can forget about this annoyance; the gasoline motor start automatically when the battery gets low and continues to charge the battery – a hybrid never needs to be plugged into a power outlet even though it will most likely be cheaper than petrol. Of course, if you forget to fill the tank…. Well that is a long walk to the next gasoline station. Still, you can carry a gas can a half mile while a tow truck is necessary in a straight electric car. This is the end of part 1. Please look out for the next installment on Technology – Hybrid Vehicles.
