Hybrids, do you want one?
Part 4 - Technology - Hybrid Vehicles The final part. Let’s resume on Part 4. If you mainly drive in the city then the gas savings may offset the high initial cost of purchasing a hybrid. Switching the gas engine on to charge the batteries will certainly cut into the efficiency. Long distance travelers may not save at all. Thinking about our planet may make it worth the expense as most hybrids CO2 emissions are about 25% less than the average family car on our roads. In the US the tax incentive for a hybrid may offer a powerful incentive to buy, but be aware, only the first 60 000 hybrids sold per manufacturer will afford you the tax incentive. There may be other terms and conditions involved. So make sure you do your homework before purchasing. My feeling and certainly a lot of experts agree that the current hybrid is only the transition phase to the real environment friendly low/no emissions free cars of tomorrow. We will typically make use of electrical motors, far more efficient batteries and include a hydrogen or methane fuel cell charger. You may even find that the fuel cells in these new hybrids may be able to power your home when plugged in. The hybrid technology may even power your home with a stand alone unit making you independent to the national power grid. Conclusion Don’t just throw good money after new hybrids because they hammer on the “GREEN” issue, do your research first, make sure it will fit your pocket as well and make sure that the manufacturer will at least carry spares for this hybrid of yours for the next ten years. You can certainly make use of smaller more efficient cars, public transport and various other methods to help save the planet and your wallet. Thank you for reading my article on hybrids. This is the end of part 4 and the final part of the four part series on Technology – Hybrid Vehicles.
