Hybrid or Not

Part 3 - Technology - Hybrid Vehicles
Part 3 of 4.

Let’s resume on Part 3.

The hybrid car offers green advantages; even a small increase in fuel economy will make a large difference in emissions over the life of your car. In large cities the localized pollution decreasing from a small increase in fuel consumption can have profound effects. Even pollution which decreases by 10% could have less health issues for people living in these cities.

The Japanese are currently the recognized leaders in hybrid technology with other countries following closely. Other countries motor manufacturers find it difficult to introduce hybrids because the license fees from the patents already gained by the Japanese are expensive.

Everybody except the Japanese was caught sleeping, basking in the sun of oil riches. The Japanese manufacturers typically own about 20 or more patents involved with the manufacturing of hybrids.

Industry analysts say US hybrids are just token models – not a serious attempt to get into the market. Hybrid introduction has to do with the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) regulations in the US. Similar regulations could also be in place in other countries.

According to industry analysts most hybrids currently sold in the world is just to fool the authorities as these regulations stipulate that for every hybrid sold, exceeding the 60 mpg mark, they are able to sell four less efficient cars in the range of 20 mpg.

Current standards stipulate that the average mileage of the manufactured cars sold by a car manufacturer should be 27.5 mpg. Therefore one hybrid in every five cars sold gets you into that bracket.

The “GREEN” image and “NEW” technology is currently the only reason why people are actually buying hybrids, as the initial input cost and marginal fuel efficiency certainly does nothing for me.

To offset the reliability issues motor manufacturers offer large period/mileage guarantees to win clients over. These guarantees typically cover the drive train and batteries.

The gas engines in the hybrids require exactly the same maintenance as found on the round of the mill car engine. Electrical motors and batteries typically require no maintenance during their lifetime, unless abused, but I am certain that the electronic systems included will not allow abuse.

Even the brake pads should last considerably longer than most hybrids because they make use of regenerative braking, pushing the momentum energy back into the battery.

This is the end of part 3. Please look out for the next installment on Technology – Hybrid Vehicles.
