Gas Saving Techniques

Part 2 - Technology - Hybrid Vehicles
Part 2 of 4

Let’s resume on Part 2.

All this new Hybrid technology comes at a price: hybrids are complex and expensive. It has two motors and all the ancillary systems to manage them plus a heavy battery and a regeneration system used to produce electricity during breaking.

With these systems working together, complexity is added. But a plus point is that our cars and the electronics controlling them have become more reliable, but failures do occur. Hybrids are typically more prone to failures and you as the owner can expect more time in the shop with larger repair bills.

Hybrids are pretty efficient compared to the normal car, typically getting consumptions in the range from 47 to 60 mpg as claimed by the manufacturers. Only about 20% to 35% better than a fuel efficient gasoline powered vehicle, but, I’ll gladly take it, especially with today’s fuel prices. The only down side is that they are not just marginally more expensive than the standard car, but anything from $5000 to $10 000 more.

The question however is when will I make up the difference in price and start making savings on the fuel that I am saving? As fuel becomes more expensive the justification to buy a hybrid may become clearer, that is if the hybrids either stay at the same price or become less expensive.

Hybrids fuel efficiency is closely coupled to major improvements in aero dynamics, weight reduction (smaller bodies) and, smaller, less powerful gas engines. Smaller engines you may ask? But wouldn’t I also get a better fuel consumption by using a smaller, lighter engine in my car?

Well, you certainly would. But then again customer demands are of such a nature that we all want the extra power and zippiness of larger engines. Therefore the hybrid may not find the support from the general public.

There are reports that drivers owning hybrids find that the real mileage traveled are actually about 10% less than the claimed miles/liter or miles/gallon. Mileage tips from the manufactures web pages, typically lists the same tips that would give better fuel economy for any car such as; drive slow, no jack rabbit starts, etc.

This is the end of part 2. Please look out for the next installment on Technology – Hybrid Vehicles.
